Spring in our forest

gepubliceerd op: 20 march 2025

Time for a fresh start!

Finally, winter is over. And although it hasn't really been winter-winter, it is still gratifying that the days are getting longer. The sun is gaining strength again (how blissful it is to sit inside behind the window in the sunshine!) and nature is waking up from its winter sleep. Believe us, in our forest, this is écht an experience. The first blossoms, birds singing, fresh green leaves… in everything you feel that spring is coming! And even now Treelodge is our very own paradise on earth. How and why? Read on quickly!

On smells, colours and the music of spring

In autumn, the forest turns red, yellow and orange. Wonderful. But spring definitely adds to this: the soft green of the first young leaves, the white and purple wood anemones and wild hyacinths, the yellow of the first yellow spear herbs raising their heads…

How beautiful is all that?

In addition to those splashes of colour, there is also the heavenly smell of spring. So’kinda wintry damp, but with notes of blossoms and fresh greenery. And then, of course, there is the soundtrack of spring. All that chirping and twittering of the little birds flying off and on with twigs. The blackbirds greeting you ’in the morning with their morning tune. And if you are very quiet, you ’ll hear a tawny owl calling in the distance at night.

Speaking of tawny owls… do you know that we placed a nest a while ago, hoping that a pair of tawny owls will choose it as their home? We are eagerly looking forward to seeing whether our Tawny Owl will soon be not just a treehouse, but a échte tawny owl home.

Enjoy nature in comfort

Lodging in our treehouses is also a real treat in spring. Why? Well, because it's the perfect mix of nature, comfort and adventure. During the day you can explore the forest and the surrounding area, and ’in the evening you nestle into the Fire Shed with a cup of tea (or a glass of wine 😉 ) for a lovely conversation, while the sun slowly disappears behind the trees. Or you crawl into the hot tub on a crisp spring night and admire the stars peeping between the canopy.

We replaced all our wood-burning stoves with cast-iron electric ones in the meantime. So you can always be sure of a cosy warm treehouse, without having to worry about wood or ashes. And do you still want to crawl around the fire? Then you can do so at our campfire spot or in the Fire Shed, where you can also cook delicious food on an open fire or bake pizza’s in our wood-fired pizza oven.

And what will you have to do if you want to stay warm?

And what could be more blissful than watching your (grand)children have adventures in our forest? Hearing them make up stories, watching them build camps – and participating in them yourself? Fun guaranteed, right!

Hiking, cycling and exploring nearby

Who says spring, says ‘go outside’ go outside. And you have plenty of opportunities to do so when you come to stay in our treehouses. Some of our favourite walks in the area:

  • The walk Out of the beaten track is great fun to do én ideal for both families and avid hikers.
  • Looking for variety én tranquillity? Then the Prinsenpark is an absolute must. It is a provincial green estate in Retie, where you can follow various walking routes and enjoy the woods, moors, meadows and ponds. It is also a super cool place to go for a picnic!
  • The Hoge Mierdse Heide is also a fun place to go hiking. Nature has recovered after a serious forest fire – or partially anyway. You can take a nice quiet walk towards the Dessel-Turnhout-Schoten canal.

For those who prefer cycling, there are also many cycling routes in and around Turnhout that take you past picturesque landscapes and pretty spots:

  • The cycling route Retie-Turnhout is an easy flat cycling route of about 18 kilometres, along the most beautiful spots of the Kempen.
  • Easy flat cycling én tasting of the Netherlands is possible via cycling route the Bels Lijntje. You will ride along the old railway bed between the Kempen's beautiful heathlands.
  • On 1 May, VTR organises a guided bike ride of some’20 kilometres along the freshly polished chapels in the area. You will get a little explanation everywhere and end with a drink. For more information, visit the website of the municipality of Retie.
You don't have to wait until May 1, by the way; you will also receive all the information via an app.
  • May it be a bit more sporty? Then there is the Seven Nits route, especially for mountain bikers. There, you choose between the red and green loop (or do both!) and then rinse your bike all the way back clean at our bike wash station! 😉

And do you fancy a dose of culture or couleur locale? There are also lots of cool things planned in Retie this spring:

  • Heritage Day
On 27 April, you can get to know all kinds of movable and intangible heritage from the neighbourhood. This year's theme is ‘Game on!’, and is about sports and games. If you're in Turnhout, be sure to pop into the Playing Card Museum - even on a different day!
  • Outdoor Play Day
Do you feel like exploring other places after playing outdoors in our forest? Lots of fun activities will be organised in Prinsenpark between 1pm and 5pm.
